My name is Arlette Kesseng. I lost my beloved father and mother to cancer. I am taking this opportunity, as a member of SVI, to channel my grief with the goal to help at least one person fight and conquer the disease. As a nurse, I recognize the importance of educating people in order to arm them with the knowledge that cancer can be detected early if one is taking the proper actions. This organization is also an avenue to avail myself and bring comfort to someone who is going through the disease, to provide needed support, or to empower one to change their life style and decrease their risk factors. I am humbled by the opportunity and the blessing to be part of such a life changing endeavor, giving of my time and expertise to help others get better.

My name is Ijeoma Amaoji, wife and a mother of two most wonderful kids, ages 9 and 5. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2006. It all began one morning as I was getting ready for work and decided to use a minute to perform a self breast examination. I felt a lump on the side of my right breast. I quickly consulted my doctor and after a mammogram, sonogram and lumpectomy, it was confirmed to be a stage three breast cancer, as it had spread to my lymph nodes. There is nothing compared to the sinking feeling I got when I was told I have breast cancer. I braced myself and the fight began.  I made a choice to live and not to die.

Going through the experience of breast cancer is not a picnic to say the least, but with loving family and friends support, helpful advice and healing power of God I was able to overcome. We have so much to learn from each other as we face the challenges of healing from cancer. Those who reach out to family and friends for love and support make it through the journey of breast cancer more successfully and that is our goal. According to Gail Sheehy, “to be tested is good. The challenged life may be the best therapist.”

Experience is not what happens to you but what you do with what happens to you.
